Ljetopis popa Dukljanina (Regnum Sclavorum), also known as the Bar Genealogy. It was created in the second half of the XII century in Bar by an anonymous author who was a priest of the Dukljansko – barske Archbishopric.

Miroslav’s Gospel, formed at the end of the 12th century, is the most important cyrillic monument of Montenegrin and South Slavic literacy. It was made according to the order of Prince Miroslav for the needs of his endowment, the church of St. Peter and Paul, located in Bijelo Polje.

A great milestone in the history of written works is the purchase of the first printing machine by the then sovereign of Zeta – Djurdje Crnojevic, who since those times realized the role and significance of written works in raising the culture and consciousness of the people. It was not only the first printing house in Montenegro, but the first printing house in a South – Slovenian country, only forty years after Johann Gutenberg printed the first book in Mainz .

During the existence of the Crnojević Printing House, the following titles were printed:

• Oktoih prvoglasnik – printed in 1494 is the first printed book in the then Zeta and at the same time the first book in one of the South-Slovenian countries

• Oktoih petoglasnik

• Psaltir

• Trebnik (prayer book)

• Četvorojevanđelje

With the printing of Oktoih prvoglasnik began the new cultural period of Montenegro, as the first country among all South-Slovenian countries to recognize the value of written works.

The Quran from the Husain Pasha Mosque from the 16th century is the most valuable Islamic literary work from the area of Montenegro. It is handwritten in Arabic and is preserved today in the mosque in Pljevlja.

Bar’s Glagolitic Misal from 1893 is a capital work that has exceptional religious value and symbolism. For the first time, it was possible for liturgy in Montenegro to be served on the Glagolitic, not in the Latin language. This historical – religious value places it among the most important written works from the territory of Montenegro.
